32 A crowd was sitting around him; and they said to him, “Your mother and your brothers and sisters are outside, asking for you.” 33 And he replied, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 And looking at those who sat around him, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! 35 Whoever does the will of God is my brother and sister and mother.”
I just finished reading “The Godfather” by Mario Puzo. It’s very graphic and violent, but a great book. Popularized by Marlon Brando’s role as Don Corleone in the movie version, the book follows the life and times of the Corleone Family Mafia.
For Don Corleone, the Family is everything. Ultimate loyalty lies with the Family, regardless of the personal cost. This heightened allegiance to family is even greater than what we assume today.
Jesus, however, calls together a different family. This new family is not united by flesh and blood, but by devotion to the Lord God. Ultimate loyalty is given to family members, not because you are kin, but because you are more than kin.
How committed are you to the family of God? Do you come to share in the family supper, which we call the Holy Eucharist? Do you check on your brothers and sisters when you haven’t seen them in awhile? May the Lord open your eyes, and open your heart, to see the new family God has given you.
