Mark 1:9-11

9 In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. 10 And just as he was coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him. 11And a voice came from heaven, “You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased.”

This is an example of a Christian icon. Icons are religious depictions of people and events from the life of Christ and the saints. One does not look at an icon, one reads an icon because the story is embedded in the icon.

In this icon of the baptism of Jesus, you can read the elements of the story: the dove descending from heaven, John the Baptist, and the angels that attend Christ during his subsequent temptation in the wilderness. Take a moment to read this icon and remember that all who are baptized are called beloved children of God.
