Mark 1:41

41 Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, “I do choose. Be made clean!”

God is not a far off God who lives in the clouds, separated from human existence. God is among us and dwells with us. The name “Emmanuel” means “God with us.”

This is the good news of Jesus Christ. The God who created the cosmos is the same God who redeems us is the same God who takes pity on us. The Lord God is master both of the eternally huge and of the infinitely small.

There is a story of a man who once carried two notecards in each hip pocket. One card read, “I am a speck of dust in an eternally huge universe.” The other read, “God knows me by name and loves me.” Both of these are true. And in the midst of God’s extraordinary magnificence, God stoops down to us and is moved with pity.

May you see God’s presence in everything you encounter today. May you see God in the vast expanse of interstellar space and in the recesses of your own heart.
