Matthew 23:29-30

29’Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you build the tombs of the prophets and decorate the graves of the righteous, 30and you say, “If we had lived in the days of our ancestors, we would not have taken part with them in shedding the blood of the prophets.”

Woe to you. The word “woe” is not so much a word for shaming or ridiculing. It was a word used during funerals. “Woe to you,” says Jesus, because the scribes and Pharisees were not really living. They were whitewashed tombs. On the outside they looked clean, but they were dead on the inside.

The question is then turned to us. Are we alive or are we dead? Are we going through the motions or are we alive to God?
