Today the Church commemorates St. Augustine of Hippo. Augustine is known for his writings, both spiritual and theological, that continue to influence the Church today though he died in the year 430.

However, it has become a recent fad to criticize Augustine for his worldly excesses. Known to have a certain wanderlust, Augustine was said to once have prayed, “Lord, grant me chastity, just not yet.” In America, as the successors of a strong Puritan, this type of honest prayer might rattle us.

I disagree. Augustine’s honesty is refreshing.

How honest are your prayers? Do you tell God what God would like to hear, or do you pray what needs to be said?
