Galatians 6:13-14

13Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us-for it is written, ‘Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree’-14in order that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

I know that I have used two images back-to-back for these daily devotions. That being said, this passage from Saint Paul is so dense that an image helps us unpack the text. In doing a simple Google search for an image of the crucifixion, this one immediately caught my attention. First, Jesus and Mary are portrayed as people of African descent (we all create God in our own image). Notice also the background. The swirling darkness, to me, symbolizes the darkness that covered the land during the crucifixion and speaks to the pain of that moment.

If this image doesn’t capture your imagination, try your own Google search. You’ll be amazed at the vast array of different depictions of our Lord’s death.
