Mark 15:21

They compelled a passer-by, who was coming in from the country, to carry his cross; it was Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus.

Take a moment to look at this artistic depiction of Simon of Cyrene with Jesus. I’m struck by the intimacy of the two, and here’s why.

As a Christian, I have always wanted to be close to Jesus. But I’m not sure if I want to step under the cross in order to do so. I would like to meet Jesus in a quiet, safe place. Yet here’s Simon meeting Jesus as he encounters the totality of the world’s pain and sin. Perhaps to meet Jesus, I need to step out and shoulder the cross.
