Matthew 18:12-13

What do you think? If a shepherd has a hundred sheep, and one of them has gone astray, does he not leave the ninety-nine on the mountains and go in search of the one that went astray? And if he finds it, truly I tell you, he rejoices over it more than over the ninety-nine that never went astray.

I wonder how the sheep in this passage went astray. Did she waste her inheritance in riotous living and end up in a pig sty? Did she sort of forget to attend church for a decade or so? Or is it possible she spoke unkindly to her spouse or fearfully refused a task she knew to be God’s will? Certainly we need rescue when colossal mistakes land us in a lonely and dangerous wilderness. But Jesus rescues us every time we fail to love God with our whole heart and to love our neighbor as ourselves. I am so grateful the Good Shepherd seeks us, finds us, and joyfully restores us when we blow it. Aren’t you?
