I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever;
With my mouth will I make known Your faithfulness to all generations.
When I was seven, my parents briefly attended a Christian home group across the street. The woman of the house played organ, and we sang together hour upon hour from a small paper-bound hymnal. I loved the music, in particular a song with words from today’s scripture: I will sing of the mercies of the Lord forever. My parents soon left the group, and receiving no further religious instruction, I drifted from my childhood faith until returning to church in my mid-twenties. Psalm 89 always brings to mind that song I was taught as a child by kind neighbors. And remembering, I reflect on the mercy and kindness of God, who protects us in our wanderings and draws us close again. How faithful is our God to all generations. How right indeed to give God thanks and praise.
