Matthew 15:7-11

7You hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied rightly about you when he said:
8 “This people honours me with their lips,
   but their hearts are far from me;
9 in vain do they worship me,
   teaching human precepts as doctrines.” ’

10 Then he called the crowd to him and said to them, ‘Listen and understand: 11it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but it is what comes out of the mouth that defiles.’

I have always been drawn to this piece of scripture knowing that it is what we produce from our hearts that shows who we are.  Jesus tells us that it is not what goes in that defiles, but what comes out.  That outward sign of who we are shows where our hearts are.  It does not take long with someone to know where their heart lies, and we must show to the world the generosity and concern for others that we have learned from Jesus.  The world around us throws things at us all day and what we chose to do with them comes from our understanding of Christ’s message.
